Which one is our national motto, e pluribus unum or In God We Trust? Let me help you guess on this. In a speech in November 2010, President Obama said it was e pluribus unum. Does that help?
Answer time: In 1956 the official motto of the US was declared to be “In God We Trust.”
Before you get either elated or angry, keep in mind that this was the height of the Cold War. Communism was officially atheist and so America was capitalist and religious. Religion of any sort would work. It was rather American to be religious. Mainly the religion of America was liberal, Sunday-morning Christianity not necessarily a robust Christian faith. But really, society was happy if you worshiped at the church or synagogue of your choice, no matter which god they preached. Just be religious.
